The CTF/FCE Announces the 2024 Norm Goble World Teachers’ Day Award Recipients

The Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF/FCE) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024 Norm Goble World Teachers’ Day Award.

The winners were revealed during a special World Teachers’ Day (WTD) event held yesterday, bringing together the public, educators, researchers, and legislators to reflect on the triumphs and challenges of Canada’s publicly funded education systems.

This award, established in 2014 and named in honour of Dr. Norman Goble, acknowledges CTF/FCE’s international partner organizations for their exceptional efforts in celebrating WTD and promoting the importance of public education.

This year, the award was presented to three remarkable organizations that have shown innovation, impact, and commitment in their WTD activities: the Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union of Ghana (TEWU), the National Teachers’ Union of South Sudan (NTUSS), and the Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT). Each organization will receive a $1,500 CAD prize to support their WTD activities.

  1. Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union of Ghana (TEWU)
TEWU will hold a teacher recognition awards ceremony to honour outstanding educators, along with student-led appreciation events and a public awareness campaign. Their initiative aims to emphasize the crucial role of teachers in shaping public education and the lives of students, with a focus on the CTF/FCE WTD theme: “Teachers are the heartbeat of public education”. The celebration will also include a radio talk show that features educator interviews, student success stories, and discussions on the importance of supporting teachers to strengthen public education in Ghana.
  1. National Teachers’ Union of South Sudan (NTUSS)
NTUSS will organize a large-scale WTD celebration to advocate for quality public education and increased government investment in the teaching profession. The event will include speeches from educators, students, and government officials, along with presentations on environmental challenges and tree-planting activities. With significant media coverage, NTUSS’s event will draw attention to the critical need for supporting educators in South Sudan and beyond.
  1.  Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT)
ZNUT will host an Education Expo to celebrate 100 years of Educational Heritage in Zambia. This event will bring together stakeholders from across the education sector to reflect on the progress made and to look ahead at the future of teaching in Zambia. The Expo will feature teacher awards, union enrollment opportunities, networking forums, and a focus on STEM education and environmental conservation, ensuring that teachers remain at the heart of educational advancement in Zambia.

The Norm Goble World Teachers’ Day Award

The award honours Dr. Norman Goble, who served as the CTF/FCE Secretary General from 1970 to 1982 and played a pivotal role in establishing World Teachers’ Day in 1994. Dr. Goble’s work continues to inspire the global education community, and the CTF/FCE is committed to supporting partner organizations that carry on this legacy by celebrating teachers and advocating for public education.

World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on October 5 and recognizes the crucial contributions of teachers around the world. The date was chosen to commemorate the 1966 UNESCO recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which underscores the importance of having competent, qualified, and motivated teachers for the advancement of society.
